History:
(almost entirely RP'd out since 2006)
Born and abandoned in a Miami Hospital, Lio Ophelia Cage has a rough start. A problematic child in her early years, Lio went from home to home and always managed to get back to the orphanage. Fights, stealing, lying and just down right bad behavior had most couples a bit overwhelmed. Lio was determined that she was meant to be a child of no one, after all, her Mother had abandoned her and who knew who her father was.
In her early teens, things started to change. She was adopted by an aging man who more or less needed help. There were never any pretenses between them. The old man made it clear that he chose her because she reminded him of his granddaughter, no longer living. Too, he thought that they could help each other, and they did. She gave him life, and he gave her humility and tranquility. Lio found his passion for books and began to change. She was tired of people not liking her and being afraid of her so she tried kindness. Any habitual bully know's how difficult it is to be anything else, but her Gran, as she called him, was always there to help.
Before Lio knew it, she was an adult and while she didn't have many friends, she was no longer a tyrant. She found peace among the shelves of the library and in the late night talks with Gran. When he passed, he left everything to his adopted daughter Lio and with it, ensured his Library would be well taken care of. Sometimes, when she was alone, Lio curled up in one of the reading chairs and imagined she could hear his laughter through the isles. It had been his library, but it was her's then.
Lio, or Loc to some, was no less vigilant than her Gran had been. She was been known to bully a few bully's in her time and as it was a private library and not a public library, she had also been known to ban people who could not behave themselves. Even so, some weekends she could be found washing graffiti off the walls, or picking up the remnants of some school yard initiation off her walk ways as it was Miami and hardly a perfectly behaved city. It was a life she learned to cherish, but everyone needs a break now and then, no?
The Librarian was a frequent visitor to the notorious Hotel in Miami named the Setai. Unknowing to her and perhaps the guests whom she delivered books to, it is home to some very evil, twisted, and demented people who might even make some of the Monsters twitch. She had fallen in love with the hotel, having never seen it's darker side and took some of the money left to her by Gran to plan herself a weeks vacation in one of it's finest rooms. Her first day was most enjoyable and relaxing but it soon became quite clear there was something darker lurking in it's midst's.
Only half way into her vacation, a day she would barely remember and yet never forget. It started out with a pool side read and ended with her dying at the hands of some very bad people. While she cannot remember exactly what happened after her head was slammed into the side of the pool, she woke up in an unfamiliar alleyway, weak, and in much pain. Though she had drowned in the pool and been dead for a full three minutes and fourteen seconds, a Doctor staying at the hotel saw her and revived her. Unlucky for the both of them, as it turned out, for the Don let his men have their way with her and killed her savoir, leaving her for dead in an alley where it might be assumed she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Her eyes were swollen shut and she felt more sick than she ever had before. She must have made some sort of sound but she couldn't remember that either. The next time she woke it was in a hospital bed with one of them sitting by her. Not sure how she knew since she couldn't see him but Lio nearly panicked but couldn't find the strength to move as he uttered a few simple words. "You are too precious. Run little librarian. Run far away."
So she did. She packed up what little she held dear and fled the country. The extent of her injuries told her how serious they were. The police had come to the conclusion that she had been mugged, beaten, and raped before being left for dead in the alleyway while she was on her way to check on her library. She did not discount the tail. She still wares the scars of her encounter, her eyes are blind and no longer seeing as a parting "gift" and eternal warning. With the money Gran left her, and much of the inventory she'd had at her Library, the librarian had her name changed, hiding the past she left behind and opened a smaller library and bookstore in Madrid, Spain. Hunted like an animal, she learned the hard way what life is like when you have a bounty on your head. Only instinct, male horniness, and underestimation had saved her and caused her to flee to France under another assumed name.
This time taking one from the witness protection handbook, she became a musician. Giving the books a rest and taking up the Violin, the former Librarian found her serenity again and a husband. A well to do advertising executive who found her mysterious past rather charming, and an excuse to have some mysterious pasts of his own every time he was away on business. Despite this, and perhaps assuming he deserved to be happy and knew a blind and scarred woman with intimate insecurities might be a burden to his libido, she still loved him. Devastated when she was kidnapped after a solo guest performance at a local Theater and told by her kidnapper that he had killed her husband and she was again alone in the world, with a bounty that made cat and mouse of her life for the Don's sick entertainment. Even more surprising, after twisting her up by ravaging her in such a way she couldn't help but enjoy it, the would-be-killer let her go.
Another new name and another new location, the Miami born woman found herself barely comfortable before found again and even that was because she had silent help from the outside. Unaware of it, she lived on, trying pottery and clay, wood working, and yes, even knitting in her attempt to get out from under the Cartel's shadow. It's been ten years now and she's finally tired of running. Taking the name Jane Doe, she's adrift in her own persona and just taking it one day at a time. As before, her smile is always warm and welcoming. She is always eager to help and delighted to share. Her very being exudes a sense of life and vitality with a hint of charity and a dash of wisdom. Through it all is that hard set of determination that is always with her (though waning and tired in recent months), glinting in her foggy eyes like a darkness of a happening that either kills you, or makes you more resilient.
