History: He was the last born son to Natalia and Giacomo Bellarmine on June 12, 1993 in Casale Monferatto, Italy. The couple already had a daughter, Sofia, and a son Matteo, but wanted to round their family out without having the traditional large Italian family. Then along came Alessandro. As a baby he was bright eyed and alert, and as a child clever and adventurous. He was climbing an olive tree on his parents estate with his older brother at the age of five when he lost his balance and fell 30 feet from the branches and violently slammed down to the earth. Landing on the back of his head, it should have been a fatal fall. Alessandro was air lifted to Ospedale San Rafaello in Milan, Italy for the severe trauma to his skull and brain. The doctors gave his parents a grave prognosis. Alessandro would not survive the night. They believed the damage to his brainstem was so severe he would be on a respirator and be in a permanent vegetative state. Only Alessandro and God knew what would happen next, as he was kept in a drug induced coma, and his skull opened to allow the swelling of his brain. For four months, Alessandro was in a coma until he began to fight the tubes. The same five year old that had come into the hospital months before had miraculously recovered with little to no side effects from his accident. Less one thing. He now could see dead people and spirits all around him, and funny colors around the people that cared for him in the hospital, and his huge extended family that would come to visit him. At first, his parents thought it was some kind of joke, and blew off Alessandro's claim to see his "Nonna Maria," or Grandma Maria standing by his beside and singing him to sleep. It couldn't be. She had been dead for some 13 years now. Over time, Alessandro had to learn to keep his developing gifts a secret, because the people that loved him didn't understand or didn't believe he saw things. Just after his 7th birthday, he was watching Rudolf Nureyev on the television one Saturday afternoon. He approached his mother, Natalia, and asked to take ballet classes so he could learn to dance, and a star was born.
When they recognized his potential he was taken to audition for the world reknown La Scala Theatre Ballet School in Milan, Italy, but was considered too young, Meanwhile he developed his skills as a child prodigy until was accepted at age 9, and would stay at La Scala for his entire training as a dancer. He was taken into the company but left when he was 19 to pursue what has become a very successful freelance career, in demand all over the world for the great classical roles in particular. Since 2012, Alessandro has served as a Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. Alessandro made his first appearance with American Ballet Theatre in 2011. His repertoire with the Company includes Albrecht in Giselle, Armand in Lady of the Camellias, Des Grieux in Manon, Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Prince Siegfried in Swan Lake and Aminta in Sylvia. Alessandro was given a grant by UNICEF to help underprivileged youth learn ballet as part of his Ambassadorship. He teaches the Balanchine method of dance as a guest instructor, after almost 10 years of dancing.
